For the last two years, there has been an attempt to move US Route 6 in Pennsylvania towards being designated as a Pennsylvania Byways, with the ultimate goal of being recognized as a one of America’s Byways as either a National Scenic Byway or an All American Road in the future.

The goal of achieving designation as one of America’s byway supports the continued efforts along the PA Route 6 Heritage Corridor. As the managing entity of the Pennsylvania Heritage Area, PA Route 6 Alliance undertakes efforts to preserve, enhance and promote the transportation heritage of one of the nation's first transcontinental highways; to sustain and enhance the small rural communities linked by the highway; and to preserve and enhance the natural, scenic beauty of one of America's favorite "road trips".

Promotional programs have attracted an estimate 350,000 travelers a year across the scenic highway spending approximately $93 million in local businesses and downtowns.

The benefits of being designated as one of America’s Bywaysinclude the enhancement of the local communities and improvement to their local economies.  The recognition of the importance of a byway’s intrinsic qualities by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation can lend support to protect and preserve a byway’s resources. In addition, the America’s Bywayscollection is marketed to national and international travelers, and use of the brand and logo can enhance the marketability of a byway. Recognition can also serve to strengthen community pride, involvement, and support of a byway.

In order to submit an application to be considered a Pennsylvania Byway and to nominate a National Scenic Byway, the counties and municipalities along the route must support the effort. Currently 42 out of the 110 municipalities along the PA Route 6 Heritage Corridor have voice support of the designation through resolutions.
