About the Sign Sculpture Garden

The PennDOT Road Sign Sculpture Garden consists of a whimsical 1200-foot-long public art piece made entirely out of old Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) road signs located along the roadside fence outside PennDOT’s Crawford County offices.

Details

The PennDOT Road Sign Sculpture Garden highlights include…

  • “Signs & Flowers” – The sculpture garden first “took root” when Allegheny College art professor, Amara Geffen, and her students worked with PennDOT to transform old road signs into whimsical flower sculptures on the corner of Smock Highway and Mercer Pike in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
  • “Read Between The Signs” – Geffen and her students worked for over a decade procuring signs and creating the next installment to the sculpture garden, a large mural along the PennDOT property’s chain-link fence featuring regional landmarks and imagery, such as the architecture of downtown Meadville, Allegheny College Bentley Hall, the oil boom in Titusville, an iconic locomotive, and scenic Route 6, of course!
