Although best known for scenic landscapes and stunning views, the true “jewels” of Pennsylvania’s Route 6 Heritage Corridor can be found tucked between the mountains, forests, and fields: the charming small-town communities. Of them, 20 are extra special, having received designation as Pennsylvania Heritage Communities due to their continued efforts to preserve their community’s heritage and improve local tourism.
In these Heritage Communities along Rt. 6, you’ll find unique landmarks, important historic sites, impressive architecture, gorgeous outdoor spaces, endless opportunities to “shop local”, and best of all, friendly people!
The rich heritage and thriving economies of the small towns along northern Pennsylvania’s Route 6 can only be attributed to the hard work and perseverance of each community’s volunteers, business owners, organizations, leaders, and residents. The Pennsylvania Route 6 Heritage Communities Program aims to support these dedicated community members in maintaining and strengthening the viability and sustainability of their communities, which are essential to ensure PA Route 6 remains “America’s favorite road trip!”
The PA Heritage Communities Program addresses the need to retain and enhance the small-town experience by assisting communities in developing their own part of the larger Route 6 story. These communities benefit from heritage tourism bringing visitors to their important historical and architectural sites, actively or passively enjoying their outdoor spaces, rekindling the spirit of road touring, and boosting the local economy by purchasing goods and services along the way.
