Explore the Lackawanna Heritage Valley, a National and State Heritage Area, on the 70-mile Lackawanna River Heritage Trail.

The Lackawanna River Heritage Trail (LRHT) “stretches more than 70 miles, passing through the heart of the Lackawanna Heritage Valley National and State Heritage Area. The Lackawanna Heritage Valley is located amid the mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania where the waters of the Lackawanna River flow. The trail is an artery that connects more than 30 communities through Luzerne, Lackawanna, Susquehanna, and Wayne County. The trail begins at the river’s confluence with the Susquehanna River at Duryea and Pittston in Luzerne County. It travels through Lackawanna County and joins the Simpson, managed by the Rail-Trail Council of Northeastern Pennsylvania. From that point, the D&H Rail-Trail extends north to the New York State border.

“The LRHT is a wonderful community asset. Many people use the trail throughout the year for walking and jogging, bicycling, enjoying nature, exercising their dog, and fitness activities. Several sections of the LRHT are open to the public.

“There are several events that use the LRHT throughout the year. Almost every weekend you can guarantee a 5K somewhere along the trail. Events like the Scranton Half Marathon, the Heritage Explorer Bike Tour, Steamtown Marathon, Riverfest, and the Great NEPA Clean-Up all use the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail. LHV encourages organizations to use open sections of the trail for events such as runs/walks, races, group bike rides, trail and river clean-ups, and activities on the Lackawanna River.” Source: VisitNEPA.org
