SIGNATURE BIKE LOOP 4

Signature Loop 4 – Canyon Rambler

If looking for a peaceful, meditative ride, the Canyon Rambler offers this and much more. The centerpiece of this loop is the Pine Creek Rail Trail through the Pine Creek Gorge, aka Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, one of the northern tier’s most scenic rides. Most people view the canyon from one of the lookouts within Leonard Harrison State Park or Colton Point State Park. Viewing the canyon from below is a whole different experience that is well worth the trip!

This loop can begin at any of the public access areas along the Pine Creek Rail Trail, including the Darling Run Access, Marsh Creek Access Area just north of Route 6, or the Butler Access Area next to Pag-Omar Farms Market. No matter where you choose to begin, the ride is easy and enjoyable. However, avoid this loop from late fall through early spring months when the ground is exceptionally wet because the rail trail can get soft. From late spring through early fall, this is not an issue.

Although this loop is a little over 45 miles long, it can be completed in a day, as the Pine Creek Rail Trail provides smooth mixed-surface riding for the first 16 miles. Things don’t get challenging until you reach Blackwell, where you’ll pick up State Route 414 East to Morris and then begin the long, steady climb up PA 287 North toward the charming town of Wellsboro. Stop by Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center or C S Sports Inc, both of which are Bike Friendly Businesses, if you’re in need of a water bottle refill or other items for the rest of your journey.

Follow PA 287 North/PA Route 6 through Wellsboro, and turn right onto PA 287 North to Pag-Omar Farms Market where you’ll again pick up the Pine Creek Rail Trail.

The Pine Creek Gorge is one of northern Pennsylvania’s greatest natural assets. With stunning views and plenty of solitude, this loop is interesting, fun, and will keep you coming back for more. Looking to make it a family adventure? Consider cutting out the big hills and just ride the rail trail down and back. Afterwards, drive up to Leonard Harrison State Park or Colton Point State Park to view the canyon from above and marvel at one of the region’s natural wonders.
